Full Version: Let's Post Topics Using English as We Have Learned at Schools.

Dear friends, I would like to invite you to use English as we have once learned at schools. For example, let us not use a sentence like this one : "Walk through that door and answer the for me, please", instead of : "Walk thru that door and answer the telephone 4 me, please".

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong using English words as long as we really know why, when, where, and how to use them. But we ought to be able to know the difference between colloquial/spoken and written English, personal letter and business letter etc. Of course we can also write spoken English when we use direct and indirect speech.

The reason why I invite you to use formal English is that we have already had enough informal English in the other Child-Threads of the English Talk.

Here are some examples of topics that we can use for discussion :

1. Why Traffic Jam is Getting More Serious in Big Cities.
2. Efforts Have to be Made to Overcome Air Polution.
3. Garbage Disposal
4. Flood in Jakarta and Its Surroundings.
5. How to Overcome Drug Abuse
6. When Will Corruption End in Indonesia?
7. Campaign for Using Bike to Go to Work
8. .................. etc

I am looking forward to your response.

Corruption will never end in Indonesia. At least not anytime soon.

All right friends, I think I'll have to do what pitix, hypocrite and fishstick have said since it is my responsibility to start a topic which I proposed myself. I especially agree that corruption will not end in Indonesia in the near future. You know why ? It is just like a vicious circle. Here's an example that I quote from a discussion in Sugeng Saryadi Forum, a private TV talk show. It is really not an easy job to eradicate corruption because when we talk about it, as a matter of fact, we are going into a vicious circle. Do you still remember about the Case of BLBI which robbed the government's money amount to more than Rp. 6.000.000.000.000,-- ? And there is still a lot more sum of money corrupted previously. What about the perpetrators/corruptors? Mostly they still at large and untouchable. It has made the state bankrupt and caused hundreds of million Indonesian people pay the price for it in the form of prices of commodities always go up uncontrollably. Indonesia is supposedly noted for its corruption, the third highest in Asia. Surprisingly, the number of corruptors ever put on trials is just a few !!! Furthermore, the average sentence ever passed by Indonesian judges is only 4,5 years. What a shame !!!

According to the above-mentioned talk show, we have gone through a number of general elections recurring every 5 years. During the preparation and campaign for the general elections, a really gigantic sum of money was spent. Where did the money come from? Nobody knows. There were no reliable reports about whether participating political parties presented honest financial report for their campaigns. Reportedly there were a lot of generous, fictitious and unidetified contributors distributing money to political parties, legislative, and presidential candidates that are supposed to be the prospective winners of the elections. Where did the money come from? People could only guess there were invisible hands with a lot of illegal money. As a result, whoever the winners were, they would never forget those who had made them the winners.

Now let us see the result. Has the government been successful in crushing the corruption for the last ten years. Has it imprisoned many corruptors ? Have the judges passed the verdicts justly to the corruptors ? Is it true that nowadays the number of corruptions is decreasing significantly ? After all, we know and we can feel the answer.

Nowadays people cannot stand corruption any longer. Issues that recommend that corruptors be sentenced to death are heard in mass media almost every day. Now friends, do you believe that death penalty or capital punishment can make people refrain from corrupting ? What is the best way to make people stop from corrupting ?

Hopefully, the coming general election next year will be better than the previous ones.

What a great invitation! I absolutely agree with this idea. For we should all agree that English is not merely something we use at home or on the streets. Instead, it is powerful tool to expand our reaches in live. So therefore is it crucial that we use proper, standard, and whenever possible, formal form of English.
Hope everybody gets my point.

Not necessarily crucial, friend. Even native speakers do not always talk grammatically. Now let's just have a look at other threads in this E T. We are free to express our thought with no bother about grammar rules. So this one is only a bit part of the whole E T. When one once is granted freedom, he tends to get more and more freedom. Let's just take the favorable side like Tukul says you have to be positive thinking. Who knows one day you are supposed to write a formal report/ formal letter in English. Your writing habit will be very helpful for you. Furthermore, by being able to write using formal standard written English, at least your writing will show the readers who you are, your mastery of English, your level of education etc. After all, there are less disadvantages by being proficient in written English.
