It is the curse of all great artists that they are to be misunderstood and be branded as insane. Such is the case with many of the early musical innovators; people like Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, SPK, etc.; early industrial pioneers who did away with a need to be musical and relied more on sonic texture and attacks of sound. Among them was Boyd Rice whose recordings as NON are some of the most innovative and some of the most confusing compositions ever to be recorded. Having done everything from experimenting with tape loops, to cutting up and reassembling vinyl records, to playing music through a speaker under a piano to record the vibrations in the piano strings, Boyd Rice's compositions are not so much music as they are audio paintings. Like his contemporaries (who he admittedly isolated himself from), he was helping to pave the way for new methods in production and performance. While not the first to use tape loops, his innovations in using such techniques did help spawn what is now common practice in modern industrial and electronic. Terra Incognita presents various tracks recorded between now and 1975 as a brief but effective display of Rice's work.

Boyd Rice (Non) has a reputation as a nasty nihilist, but he's produced some of the most exquisitely gorgeous music ever-even an atheist might call some of it heavenly. Terra Incognita surveys Rice's nearly 30-year tenure as a maverick sound sculptor. Over these 13 tracks, Rice proves himself to be the master of hypnotic loops, be they lush, chiming Cocteau Twinsy guitars, scything zithers, stereopanned harps, or decaying tintinnabulation. And for sinners, Rice offers "A Taste Of Blood," a sonic catastrophe in miniature that captures the howls of the damned as hellfire consumes them. That's entertainment.

Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Yvonne Elliman, Marcy Levy (vocals); George Terry (guitar); Mel Collins (saxophone); d*ick Sims (keyboards); Carl Radle (bass guitar); Jamie Oldaker (drums, percussion).

Recording information: Olympic Studios, London, England (05/1977).

SLOWHAND was the album which defined the new cool of Eric Clapton, a sultry, laid-back mix of rock and blues, with a heavy dose of country and southwestern regional sounds to leaven the blend. After LAYLA, SLOWHAND was probably Clapton's most popular, fully realized solo disc.

The opening number was by J.J. Cale, whose "After Midnight" had been one of the real joys of the guitarist's first solo excursion, ERIC CLAPTON. "Cocaine," with its slow grinding beat, menacing melodic vamp and one-step from perdition lyrics, was the toughest, most rocking number on SLOWHAND, and a major radio hit from the outset.

A couple of vocal duets with countryish harmonies set the tone for the rest of SLOWHAND. "Lay Down Sally" was a funky, chicken-fried bit of boogie with a taut, melodic aside from Clapton's twangy Stratocaster, while Don Williams' sweet, soulful "We're All The Way" provided a low-key vehicle for Clapton's tender vocal exchanges with Marcy Levy, as his understated arpeggios toll away in the background.

Dale Hawkins (born Delmar Allen Hawkins on August 22, 1936 in Goldmine, Louisiana) is a pioneer American Rock singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist who is often called the architect of the swamp rock boogie. (Fellow rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Hawkins is his cousin.)

In 1957, Hawkins was playing at Shreveport, Louisiana clubs, and although his music was influenced by the new rock and roll style of Elvis Presley and the guitar sounds of Scotty Moore, Hawkins blended that with the uniquely heavy blues sound of black Louisiana artists for his recording of his swamp-rock classic Susie Q. Fellow Louisiana guitarist and future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Burton provided the signature riff and solo. The song was chosen as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
He served as executive vice president of Abnak Records; Vice President, Southwest Division, Bell Records (here he produced Bruce Channel, Ronnie Self, James Bell, the Festivals,the Dolls, and the Gentrys); and A&R director, RCA West Coast Rock Division, working with Michael Nesmith and Harry Nillson. In the 90s, he produced the critically-acclaimed "Goin Back to Mississippi" by R. L. Burnside's slide guitarist Kenny Brown.

Hawkins' pioneering contributions have been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
