I disagree to have an English as our Nation Language (If we can make Indonesian as The Next International Language), but I agree if our villagers can communicate in English.
We know that English has been an International Language, how could we conquar the world if we don't understand what they speak...... Better we conquare diplomatically than powerly............
Nothing impossible in this world........ "If you think you can, You will"

well, in my opinion, a nation can grow well if we accept changes -including make english as secondary language.
Perhaps we can see singapore ,malaysia or phillipine, they become big is because they see and accept changes.
I guess, we as an indonesia should adapt something good, it doesn't mean that we have no moral if we accept changes. Sometimes i get confuse to see our leader say in public proud with their nationality by rejecting any good influence in changes. We should admit, we had narrow minded so that we can not growth well.

"If you think you can, You will"
So if I think I can move a mountain,I will move it?lol, ridiculous, yeah sometime we need to be optimistic, then again we will reach some point that we call "unreachable."
According to topic, there is nothing we can do to make English as our National language,we grow in Indonesia, and people there speak Indonesian as they grow up,I meant, look we are used to speak Indonesian since we was born,if you think you want to change our language, try to change it from yourself first and then later you can influence people in our beloved country to speak in English.
Edited*
What I meant by change from yourself is try to learn English and speak at home, later you will use to it and you will find that it's easy to speak in English.

hahaha honestly i don't know why. Besides that, why should i ? lol =P
I take "malaysia" as an example is because we have similarity in many things. So...If they can do it, for sure we can do it, even better.
But if you ask everyone you know, "Can we be as better as japan or NL?" i think most of them will say "NO", they will tell you the reason is because they were too smart or too bla bla and so on....
But if you try to ask the same person, "Can we be as better as Malaysia? " well i think many of us think we can.
So if we have those optimistic rather than the opposite, it's easier for us to achieve better life.
Btw the indonesia have you and many youth whom have passion to have better life, so i'm we will have it in the future. Just try to be honest in every condition and circumstances.

^ But then again, the big question is could Indonesia achieve that? It's ridiculous that Indonesian people are completely retard due to obvious reason. Look, do you even know that busway which is now operating in Jakarta originally comes from Africa?Indonesia can only plagiarize that without any theory about it.Africa uses it for connecting suburb to city, but Indonesia uses it to connect from one part of the city to another part of city, we take some instances as an example, Government uses it and assume that it could prevent terrible traffic and so on,but in fact?It makes Jakarta has more traffic than before because it took a half part of the road. Don't you think it's ridiculous? Take another example, you guys know about "Jahe?" The traditional medicine that originally comes from our country?Currently, the copyright has been taken by Japanese people and Indonesia will need to pay for fine if Japan caught Indonesia uses it(assume that Jahe's price will increase in the future).Yes, we know that Indonesia has many debts from another country, then later on Indonesia needs to pay the fine for using its own medicine because of the obvious reason?) Also, I heard that "tempe" copyright has been taken by United States of America,OMG how to rebuild our country or at least make our country still "exist" in the future? It is,however, there is a probability, if the government is "willing" to rebuild Indonesia without any help from another country,we hopefully still can "exist" in this cruel world.
I don't insult Indonesia or anything that you wish to call that term, but we see the truth, see the fact?Could you see the truth?Yes truth is hurtful, even we believe or we think that we can compete "better" with Malaysia(yes,we have several similarities with Malaysia thats why we always want to make comparison between us and Malaysia) , we couldn't achieve it because we don't have willingness to do that and the Government can only talk without any action in it.

Yeah hopefully dude,I think that Indonesia can't be helped anymore because people in there are already s****D and can't think about long term, they only can think about short term, and only know how to make money immediately without any consideration for example loan to bank or use credit card as long as they still can scratch it. lol

That's why i'm saying Indonesia have "YOU" [you and me and many others] whom willing to do our best to have better life.
If you join to the group which you've been described [plagiat and short minded], we won't have a better life.
How about if we try to do tiny things for our kindness, like not throwing garbage on the street, and many other small things. Just do the small things with no burden.
Well i guess it's a bullshit if we want to do something big for indonesia.
btw I believe by changing our habit, we give influence to others hopefully.
Famous People said, "Don't ask you country can do for you, but what can you do for your country."

I think it will be an outstanding improvement for indonesian ppl if they're use english as they're language (first or second language). You can see ppl around u who can speak english fluently. They're looking more open minded, right? that's what i'm talking about! Open minded it's something obstacle for mostly indo ppl. So,i hope if mostly indo can use english, they can open they mind. That means, indonesian aims to be a leader nation on the region can be done.

open-minded and speaking english are two different topics.
you may speak english yet you still have a narrow mind.
it's not about speaking english that make people better.
being able to speak/write english merely gives you an access to any english literatures or any information presented in english language.

I don't mind making English as my third language (after Sundanese and Indonesian language), as it is already de facto for me now. I think we should learn about other culture from every other part of the world, to respect other nation and ourselves. What are we going to lose? I don't think we will lose our identity as Indonesian; it will help you understand yourself and others, and we'll also get the chance to learn how other people got into success.

I don't think including English as a national language is necessary. Not everyone in this country need this anyway. Moreover, looking back in national exam for the high school which include english as one of the subject is a little bit pointless, especially in rural area, where they have inadequate resources and teachers. I believe even if there's a 'prodigy' child when he/she's success in his/her education, He/She won't be able to improve their homeland, without a good infrastructure to support it.
I've been in one of those "desa tertinggal" during my KKN course in my university years, what they need is better infrastructure, such as roads, telecommunication, electricity to market their goods, to improve economy. When the economy is better, then we could talk about supplying goods to broader market. I chatted with then "kepala desa", he stated that they're already propose several times about road improvement, up to their village border covered with ashpalt, however in the middle to the nearest district town (kabupaten), it's cut short by muddy road.

ok! back to topic!
what about English as our second language? I say why not!, as long as you remember that it is "second" language!.. i remember when i'm running a little travel counter at Bali (if you ask me, why on all my reply and therad it keeps give you an image that i've been everywhere the answer is yes!, since i'm 14 i'd like to travel, i've been around Indonesia, except Papua, i don't know why but by some reason I always can't reach that island

, and if you say that my traveling is a waste of my parents money? then you are wrong..lolz...all my traveling money i EARN it from everykind of works, sometimes I must find job at wherever place i stuck!.. lolz even being a "Kuli panggul") well ok back to my story

back at that time i met some tourist from Malaysia (real melayu guys note this!) that can only speak in english, cannot speak with melayu anymore, i don;t know if it's the true or just some kind of arrogancy, but the point is she could not speak in her language anymore....
so English for second language? why not, just don't forget your first language!.. that's all guys!

Why, my reason is... our community (most Indonesian people) must to push for study English Language.
And must with hard method, like presiden/goverment rule.

Let me relate to you my experience. I am a Singaporean of Javanese descent as both my parents are from Jawa Timur who migrated to Singapore to seek a better life for themselves. Both my parents do not speak a word of English until very recently where they had to learn from the grandchildren they are taking care of. As for me, I went to school where English was the language of instruction and it was therefore a necessity to master to get anywhere. I am also taught Bahasa Melayu in school which strangely was a subject called "Second Language". Whilst I am more comfortable communicating in English rather than Bahasa Melayu, this does not make me less of a Javanese as I still do take off my tie and put on a comfortable sarong when I reach home and practice many of the Javanese rituals and culture ( in Singapore these may be a little different from what my relatives in Jawa Timur pratice - mainly due to adaptations through assimilation in a new place).
What I'm really trying to point out is that learning and mastering English does not diminish my cultural roots but has in fact exanded my horizons far and wide as I am able to converse intelligently with nearly half the workd's population and now has also made knowledge acquisition from the Internet a breeze.
Indonesia should seriously look at how it can encourage, cajole and institutionalise the learning of English amoongst its population. It may take another generation to see the results but it will certainly make Indonesians who are already known for their friendly and polite disposition a more rounded and appreciated world citizen.

indonesian is our nation language (PERIOD)
but let's face this.. nowadays, english is priority.. however we don't agree, it's the world that already decide that if we want to go big, go international, one of many things we should have is english language. it's like our body needs water or like a car who needs fuel. that's the world needs english language..
so, just for suggestion, start from urself to learn english, then ask ur family, ur friends, and all people u know..
start learn english, there is never too late to learn something. right??
just my opinion,
