Graphics are better and there are cut scenes to keep the story interesting. The controls default was just plain sad. No one uses curser keys for the PC, we use WASDâ?¦hello! I had to change almost all of the default keys for the control key pad. It is difficult to manuver Lara as she does not slide left or right, only turns.If your character is in the crouch position, you are unable to slide left or right and I found this very frustrating. If your gun is drawn, it is terribly annoying to run up stairs because although you are telling her to go upstairs, she inevietibley wants to go back downâ?¦.though it is very funny to watch Lara run like a bow-legged guy up a flight of stairs.

Journey to the Center of the Earth has its heart in the right place. It's an unpretentious point-and-click adventure game where you explore an exotic world, collecting countless inventory items and solving puzzles with them. From that perspective, fans of old-school adventures should warm up to the game immediately. Then again, the game is marred by bugs, design problems, low production values, and general sloppiness that usually overshadow its genuine charms.
Journey to the Center of the Earth is inspired by Jules Verne's classic novel of the same name, but if you haven't read it, don't worry: The game's story stands on its own (even if it's very wobbly on its narrative feet). Taking part in a popular adventure game trend, Journey puts you in the shoes of a young female character, in this case a photojournalist named Ariane. Tomb Raider Anniversary




In 1996, the original Tomb Raider was launched. The 3D game design, controls and graphics were truly ground breaking for their time. Furthermore, gamers were also presented with a unique, female human playable character with which they could become emotionally attached, Lara Croft. The original Tomb Raider sold over seven million copies and is still heralded as an absolute classic and one of the best action adventure games ever. Tomb Raider defined the PlayStation and changed the way that people played games.

Heroes Of Might & Magic 4 + Expansion Packs





Unlike previous games, where they had little active role in combat, heroes are now present on the battlefield with their troops. It is now possible to have armies with more than one hero, or with no heroes at all, although armies without a hero are incapable of performing certain tasks, such as capturing enemy towns or structures. Both the adventure and combat maps have been converted to a fixed-view isometric 3D display. The traditional hexagon-based battle grid has been converted into a much higher-resolution square-based grid, making it easier to feature units of different sizes. Non-hero spellcasting units are now given proper spell selections. Retaliation now occurs simultaneous with the attack, and ranged units are now capable of retaliating against ranged attacks. Each individual troop unit now has its own movement allowance on the adventure map, and units can be split off independently of the main army. Logistics have further been restricted by the elimination of the "Dimension Door" spell, as well as "Fly" and artifacts that allow flight, with the only remaining long-distance movement spell being "Town Gate," which only takes an army to the nearest town. This, in turn, is partially compensated for by the elimination of the need to revisit resource-producing structures each week, and the introduction of a new Town structure, the Caravan, which can be used to move troops and Heroes invisibly and rapidly between towns, as well as bringing troops produced at external dwellings directly to a town.

The Gathering Storm offers six hero campaigns, more than 20 maps, 16 additional artifacts, four new creatures (Goblin Knight, Evil Sorceress, Gargantuan, and Dark Champion) with unique characteristics. Each of the first five campaigns features a new specialty hero, including the dark priest Alita Eventide, archmage Bohb, wizard Kozuss, barbarian Dogwoggle, and bard Agraynel. There isn't much new in Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, an expansion pack for DMA's cartoonish carjacking game. The setting makes some surface differences possible: You drive on the left, the soundtrack features music appropriate to the era (think Yardbirds and spy movie themes), and police say "you're nicked" instead of "you're busted." Other than that, the Grand Theft Auto formula remains intact: Steal some cars and commit some crimes. Unfortunately, all of the gameplay problems remain as well. And Grand Theft Auto had a lot of gameplay problems.

The original Grand Theft Auto raised some eyebrows upon its release because of its violent gameplay. You take on the role of a petty crook who wants to earn the respect of more-powerful crime bosses. To do so, you must run errands, which are usually broken up into several small tasks. These tasks usually involve picking up henchmen, destroying vehicles, assassinating enemies, or often some combination thereof. To complete your tasks, you must steal cars and drive like a madman all over the map (and sidewalks, and pedestrians), all the while avoiding (or disposing of) the police that become an increasing nuisance as you rack up the crime tally.

Leave it to your own moral barometer to decide whether or not that sounds like a good time. If it does, then you may just be able to overlook the game's faults. But the premise is the only element that makes Grand Theft Auto anything more than a top-down racing game with poor control, frustrating mission design, and mediocre graphics.

The control issue is the biggest problem with the game. First, the cars are touchy. Steering left or right sends you careening in that direction. But this isn't the problem. What makes it difficult is that almost everything in the game will stop you dead in your tracks. Brush against a wall? Stop. Hit a street sign? Stop. OK, you can run over pedestrians and some environmental objects, but the stop-and-go vehicle movement becomes irritating quickly. It becomes especially frustrating when you're trying to follow the blotchy directional pointer to your next assignment with three police cars on your tail. And why is it that when you're on foot, your body behaves like a tiny auto? Trying to run from the police is no easy task when you have to make a three-point turn and you aren't even in a car.

The control problems wouldn't be so frustrating if the missions didn't seem like they were designed for an arcade game where the sole goal is to get you to keep pumping in quarters. There's no saving except between maps, and each map can include a number of assignments and take a good deal of time to complete.

Lastly, Grand Theft Auto just doesn't look or sound that good. There are a number of resolutions to view the game in, but the fact that the view zooms in and out constantly makes it difficult to see properly at any resolution. The highest camera angle in the game makes things bearable, but even that has an annoying in-and-out shimmy when you get some good velocity going. There is a 3D accelerated (3dfx only) mode, but it's only available if you run the DOS version of the game. The music is great, and the radio effect - in which different songs are playing in different cars - is really cool. But the Charlie-Brown-adult-on-helium chattering of your mission briefings gets grating in a hurry.

Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969 does have some good things going for it. The go-anywhere, do-anything nature is its biggest plus, and if the structured assignments don't appeal to you, you can take any car joyriding and create a little crime spree of your own. There's a tangible sense of tension as you're trying to get to a safe house with the police on your back, and the way the police try to set up roadblocks is a nice touch. But Grand Theft Auto just has too many problems to make it anything more than a premise in search of a better game. All you would-be thugs out there keep your fingers crossed and hope the sequel addresses these problems.

Hitman: Codename 47



It's hard to deny the appeal of Hitman: Codename 47. What action fan hasn't wanted to slip into the suit of a diamond-hard assassin-for-hire equally adept at both stealthy hits and all-out assaults? Hitman certainly provides you with the tools of the trade, offering everything from piano wire and silenced pistols to bull-pup submachine guns and predator-style miniguns. It also lets you perform many of the tricks of the trade, like stealing your enemy's clothes and dragging bodies away so roving patrols won't stumble onto them and get curious. Unfortunately, heavily scripted level design and some fairly dumb enemies get in the way of the fun, forcing players to rely more on memorization than quick reactions. Be prepared to play each level several times just to figure out exactly how to accomplish your objectives, and several times after that to successfully carry them out. At least there was a lot to look at as we repeated each level. Hitman has some of the most beautiful graphics ever placed in a game of this type and the rendering engine can depict both lush outdoor environments and near-photographic-quality interiors. The audio is equally splendid, and after some practice you can tell what an enemy is firing simply by listening to the weapon's report. If the gameplay equaled the audio-visual quality, we'd have a classic on our hands, but as it stands Hitman plays more like a puzzle game where you have to guess what the designers wanted you to do. --T.
