XIII Century

Calling XIII Century: Death or Glory a poor man's take on the Total War series may seem like a condemnation of this tactical RTS with mere faint praise. But even though this compendium of great medieval battles might not be as all-encompassing as its big brothers from Creative Assembly, first-time developer Unicorn Games Studios has put together a challenging historical warfare simulation with outstanding depth. It feels a little stripped down when it comes to frills and extra gameplay options, although the game has it where it counts if all you're interested in is pitting your mettle and might against enemy generals on the battlefield.
There actually isn't much here aside from you going all medieval on the computer's posterior. XIII Century swaps the stereotypical grand campaign where you rule an empire for "campaign light" mission packs where you fight alongside the medieval armies of England, France, Germany, Russia, and the Mongolian hordes of Genghis Khan. Each of these collections features five separate historical battles that you unlock one by one. So the English start with Evesham then move on to Falkirk, Conwy, Lincoln, and Lewes. The Russians fight at Yaroslav, Torchev, Lake Peipus, Rakovor, and Lipitsa. The French take to the bloody fields of Taillebourg, Muret, Tagliarozzo, Benevento, and Bouvines. And so on. You get a pretty comprehensive tour of all the 13th-century hot spots by the time you work your way through all five nations and a set of bonus battles that open up as your rank grows through winning battles.

All this might seem a bit on the skimpy side to anyone coming off of an overwhelming epic like Medieval II: Total War. But since the battles here are so thoroughly depicted, it's hard to quibble with the warfare-centric focus. For starters, XIII Century is tough. Battles are founded on a rigorous rock-paper-scissors formula, so you can't just lumber about and rush foes with no consideration as to their relative strengths and weaknesses. This isn't a simple formula, either. Although many basics are in play here (keep cavalry away from pikemen, keep archers on high ground, that sort of thing), unit statistics are heavily detailed. This gives you a lot to keep track of during battles, which tend to fly by even at regular speed, but at least the interface provides ready access to everything you need to know. Moving the mouse cursor over unit formations provides banks of numbers detailing morale, number of wounded, whether or not the flanks and rear are covered, and so forth. So you can get instant snapshots of how your troops are faring when things are going hot and heavy, which lets you keep pace and give the right commands at the right times.

Stats aren't much help when it comes to dealing with battlefields, though. Maps here are so intricately detailed that you have to use the terrain to your advantage in order to have a chance at victory, even if the odds are heavily in your favor. Each is packed with hills that provide great positions for archers, paths that allow cavalry units to pull off sneaky flanking maneuvers, rivers that let you set up almost impregnable defenses, and so forth. Having to take the lay of the land into account before giving even the most basic order really enhances the realism of medieval warfare, and underlines how battles can turn on presumably minor issues such as how well a general uses a hill. Beautiful, detailed graphics really bring these backgrounds to life, too. Panning around during battles reveals postcardlike vistas of hills, mountains, and rivers, along with the rather incongruous (if majestic) sight of soldiers in full armor.

Cunning artificial intelligence makes the challenge presented here even stiffer. Enemy forces know the rock-paper-scissors formula well and use it to pull off some truly stunning attacks. Expect any and all openings to be exploited, so be sure not to leave any archers uncovered by heavy ground troops or enemy cavalry will decimate them in moments. One mistake can easily cost you a battle, even if it looks like you're presiding over a triumphant rout. Defenses are also adroitly handled by the AI. Even if you execute a brilliant plan that catches the enemy off-guard, computer-controlled forces tend to launch counters that can turn things around in the blink of an eye. Battles can't be won on one or even two astute maneuvers, so you have to string together a full series of smart moves to emerge victorious. It's astonishing how well computer armies rally from serious setbacks, regularly bouncing off the canvas from even crushing blows like having archers slaughtered by a sly flanking cavalry charge.

"Rhem3: The secret Library" continues the story from its two predecessors "Rhem" and "Rhem 2: The Cave", but can of course also be played without having played the previous two titles. Your task is to once again help the brothers Kales and Zetais to discover a new part of their fascinating world. After you have found a letter from Zetais with instructions you start the journey to Rhem once again...
On your arrival you meet Kales who has discovered that a mysterious artifact, a black gem, is hidden somewhere on Rhem. Because the doorway must be opened by two persons but remains open just long enough for only one person to slip through, you are the only one accessing this new part of the island. Again, on your own you must uncover these new secrets of Rhem.
You will soon find out that the mysterious black gem is not the only mystery on Rhem. You
will discover new passages to unknown but also to familiar and well-known places on Rhem. To find the black gem you must for one uncover the hints hidden in the secret library. But you will also need the help of some other characters to solve all the mysterious of Rhem. Some of these characters, like the redcapped Cavemen, you already met in "Rhem 2". But this time they will ask something of you in return for their help.
" Rhem 3: The secret Library" sets you into a huge, fantastic world full of strange vehicles and buildings, unknown mechanisms and machines, secret passages and doorways. Nibiru Age of Secrets

You play Martin Holan, an Eastern European student/archivist desperate to escape an office buried under "loads of old papers" as the game begins. He gets his wish--and maybe a bit more than he bargained for--when his professor uncle calls with the news that he wants him to investigate a recently discovered Nazi mine for evidence of the existence of Nibiru. According to the prof, Adolf and pals were desperately trying to find the 12th planet (and the presumably advanced technology of its alien citizens) at the close of the war as a way to save the Third Reich from destruction. Research seems to indicate that the Nazis were close to making a huge discovery when the war ended in 1945, and that the gathered evidence may have been secreted away in this mine. With that, you're off to discover if Nibiru is myth or reality. And the search isn't the usual archaeological expedition. Mysterious foes without any qualms about murdering people for information are aware of the mine and its connection with the Nazi search for the missing planet, so there's a definite Indiana Jones vibe to the entire adventure. The Settlers Rise Of An Empire The Eastern Realm-PROCYON

The Settlers: Rise of an Empire û The Eastern Realm is the
first add-on to The Settlers: Rise of an Empire.

The Goddess of the Green Fire doesn't like the old Eastern
Empire which is now under your rule. So as any good enemy,
she threatens the current state of peace and has to be
eliminated. But yours is not the only state in the Eastern
Realm that is threatened by the presence of the Goddess so
the beautiful Saraya, only child of Praphat, Mogul of Hidun,
allies herself with you.

She is the only new hero the add-on adds to the game and her
passive abilities lowers not only the building price of
trading posts but also makes it cheaper to buy resources
there. Her activate ability is to demand tribute from other
factions.

Besides the new hero, the most obvious new addition is the
climate. Much like in the winter scenarios in the original,
not everything can be produced in a desert and the new weather
pattern monsoon can make whole areas inaccessible due to
floods. Honey, fish and corn are none existent there. To help
the player to overcome these handicaps a bit, the add-on brings
two new buildings to the game: the fountain and the trading
post. While the fountain saves up water during the rain season
which can then be used during the dry season, the trading post
allows the player to engage in trading with the other factions.
There are also a few new decorative objects available including
a triumphal arch and a sun-dial.

The last gameplay addition is the return of the geologist,
already known from the previous games. But unlike the previous
games in which he scouted good places for new mines, this time
he can reactivate already dry iron-mines.

Besides the new campaign the add-on also includes new
multiplayer- and single player-maps. Three multiplayer-maps and
four single player-maps were made by the community during a mapping
contest held on the official website of the game.

Time Commando

Your mission is to destroy the virus that has invaded the Historical Tactical Centers central computer system. The game leads you through 8 of history's grandest epochs to arrive at the 9th level where the virus is located. To do this, as you travel through time you must capture as many non-infected memory circuits (represented by blue chips) as possible. This way, you will send all the healthy memory circuits back to the main computer each time you reach the memory upload terminals.

But watch out! Time is against you, and the virus is progressively attacking the main computer's memory. When the memory is completely contaminated by the virus, the game's over. Your work will be slowed down considerably by the horde of virtual enemies deployed by the virus. You must combat and eliminate all these enemies as quickly as possible.

NOTE :

You have to launch the game from DOS. Go into the folder that has the game, and type in timewin.exe to start the game.

Go to "start", then "all programs", then "accessories", then "command prompt", and then use the "cd/" command to navigate to the folder where time commando is. Then once you are in the folder where time commando is, type in timewin.exe and Play.

After a bloody, running gunfight with gang members, Reed corners the betrayer in a building basement and guns him down. Dropping his empty Uzi, Reed is almost shot and killed by another gang member, but an NYPD detective named Terry Higgins saves Reed.

Isaiah Reed (Marcus' father) and Higgins have been friends for a long time. Higgins tells Reed that he should be ashamed of the level he's sunk to. Although Reed willingly offers to allow Higgins to arrest him, Higgins refuses. He says that he's going to cover up Reed's involvement in the shoot-out, but this will be his final chance to clean up his act before he's left to the mercy of the NYPD. Reed agrees, and shuffles off to tend to his injuries. As he does so, Higgins sighs and says, "Merry Christmas."

Five years later, Marcus Reed is now an officer of the NYPD, having worked the beat for four years to become one of the precinct's best street cops with Higgins' mentoring and guidance. At the urging of Higgins, he applies to test for his detective's badge and a transfer to the Organized Crime Unit. After passing the test with flying colors, but the head detective does not believe he is ready so Terry takes Reed out for a few basics, afterwards Reed and Higgins go to visit Reed's father in jail. The visit is cut short by a phone call to Higgins. A contact for a case he's working on has called a meeting in another part of town. Marcus Reed and Higgins hurry to the contact point. Before getting out of the car, Higgins instructs Reed to come in guns blazing if he's gone for too long. As Higgins walks into the building with a briefcase, Reed leans over to pick up some of Higgins' cigarettes that have fallen out of the glove box, and suddenly, a massive explosion sends the undercover squad car flying through the air.

Back at the precinct, Reed is informed that Higgins was killed in the explosion. Reed is denied a place in the OCU, for now[citation needed]. Marcus is then informed that he will be going back out on the street as a plainclothes cop while the department investigates Higgins' murder. As Reed resumes his duties, he is contacted by FBI agent Gabriel Whitting, who requests a meeting in a parking garage downtown. Whitting informs Reed that a member of the OCU is a mole and likely organized Higgins' death. Whitting does not know who but does know that the mole was working with four major crime syndicates: the Magdalena Cartel, the President's Club, the Palermo Mob, and the Shadow Tong. Whitting wants Reed to investigate these four crime groups to track down Higgins' killer. After being given a folder with information on the Magdalena Cartel, Reed sets off on his mission of revenge while attending to his street duties along the way.

Epic has taken the core of Unreal Tournament 2003, with its massively improved graphics, new weapons, and huge levels, and added layers and layers of polish and game play depth. Along with all of UT2003's game modes and maps, UT2004 will be released with vehicles, new weapons, two new game modes, and more new maps. The popular Assault mode from the original Unreal Tournament makes a welcome return to the series. The game mechanics remain the same: one team attacks by completing a series of objectives, while the other team must prevent them from succeeding. The new Onslaught mode is best described as connect-the-dots, where players compete to take over neutral nodes and establish bases in strategic locations.

While there's a whopping total of 10 different game modes, assault and onslaught are bound to get the most attention. The new onslaught mode is the biggest departure from past UT games, and it sets up team battles for 10 to 32 players on large outdoor maps. At first glance, the expansive, rolling terrain might look a lot like Tribes 2 or Halo, and like these games, there are maps big enough to make running from point-to-point seem prohibitively slow. But a few key innovations keep the pace fast, and as powerful as the vehicles are, those on foot are far from helpless. Onslaught focuses on power nodes that are strategically distributed on the maps, and the ultimate goal of the mode consists of destroying the power core located in the opposing base. The nodes connect in certain configurations, and nodes located behind front lines can't be attacked, which concentrates the action around just a node or two at a time. Once a node linking to the power core is captured, the core itself can be attacked directly, thus pressuring the defenders to desperately man the base defenses or recapture the pivotal node.

Unreal Tournament 2004 isn't just an expansion pack or semi-sequel to last year's 2003 edition. It's a full blown and worthy sequel to the original Unreal Tournament, and a rock solid multiplayer and single-player game in its own right.

For starters UT2004 looks fantastic. The Unreal engine is built to compete with the best graphics engines around, and Epic didn't skimp on the special effects here. The missions run the gamut from cramped, intense corridor fighting to wide-open spaces. There are plenty of vehicles to pilot, and all of your favorite weapons, from the rocket-launcher to the flak cannon.

The single-player mode is still extremely strong because the robots you compete against are so well-programmed. They're not programmed to beat you, per se, but rather to play convincingly like a cadre of real people. Some are good, some are bad, they miss occasionally, and they even spout trash talk like people do online.

Multiplayer is where it's at with the return of Deathmatch mode, Domination, Double Domination, Capture the Flag, the return of Assault mode (a favorite missing from the 2003 edition). A brand new concept called Onslaught challenges teams to capture Power Nodes scattered throughout the level. The game offers the fun of paint-ball with the thrill of vicarious warfare and ultra-violence, in the safety and comfort of your own office or computer room. Really, the only complaint here is the whopping 6 gigabyte hard drive installation requirement and the fact that the game requires an impressive computer to run it.
